According to family legend, a wee Mary Norton stood on the church pew, hymnbook held high (though upside down) opening and closing her mouth in time with the same movements made by an elderly gentleman in her view. She sang with her Dad, in school and church choirs, at camp, with and for friends, and on her own. She resumed singing with intention about ten years ago, and has been exploring relationships between music, singing and holistic learning and being. Along the way, Mary has also been learning about expressive arts practices and how they can invite and support holistic education.
Mary has been involved in the adult literacy field in various roles since the 1970s, including librarian, government consultant, volunteer, researcher, writer and program developer. She has a PhD (University of Alberta, 1992) and recently completed a Certificate in Counselling Women (Athabasca University).
Mary is currently in transition from full time work as a coordinator in an adult literacy program, to part time facilitating in the program, in order to allow more time and space for her own learning and for work with Windsound Learning Society.
